Instruments Care
Proper care and maintenance significantly extends the working life of stainless steel surgical and veterinary instruments. We recommend the following:
- Immediate Rinse — Rinse instruments in cool water immediately after use to prevent blood and debris from drying on the surface.
- Cleaning — Clean thoroughly with a neutral-pH enzymatic detergent before sterilization; avoid saline solutions and harsh chlorine-based cleaners, which can pit and corrode stainless steel.
- Lubrication — Lubricate box-joints and hinges with an instrument-grade, water-soluble lubricant after cleaning and before sterilization.
- Sterilization — Follow the autoclave manufacturer's recommended cycle; allow instruments to dry fully before storage.
- Inspection — Regularly check ratchets, box-joints and cutting edges for wear, and set aside any instrument that no longer closes, cuts or locks correctly.
- Storage — Store instruments in a dry environment, ideally in dedicated trays or cases, to avoid contact damage between instruments.
